Prologue
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was on a Tuesday, March 12 in the year 1259. A date remembered by the entire world. On this day the almighty military force of Ashran, a powerful kingdom which was known for it’s military power for decades suddenly launched an full scale assault on the bordering country of Elronde.
Ashran and Elronde had been allies for many generations and thus this attack was a complete surprise. King Ishwald Elronde the fifth was dealt a devastating blow by this attack, his forces where unprepared, surprised and in minority. Because of this he lost a few important battles:
Battle on Eldar plains: The forces of Darin outnumbered the army of Ishwald with 3 to 1. During this heated battle, king Ishwald lost two of his greatest generals, as well as his dear brother, Lord Oswin Elronde. It was a crushing blow to the morale, pride and the royal family of that of Elronde.
Battle near Mitghin: Also known as “the slaughtering”. It was near this city where the army of king Darin had managed to cut off the main army of king Ishwald with a surprise attack. The soldiers of Ishwald fought with all their strength but it wasn’t enough. All where killed except of a small battalion a hundred men strong under the command of Captain Kardi. He had managed to blow a gap in the enemy and flee together with the king.
Battle of capital city Okata: King Ishwald had regrouped his man here for a final offence. Unfortunately this became a defense as the soldiers of the Ashran kingdom came and sieged the great walls surrounding the city. It took almost a whole year for Darin’s army to break trough but eventually they did, the soldiers of king Ishwald where hungry, tired and worn out of the constant fighting, it wasn’t much of a fight and large portions of soldiers surrendered or switched sites. The king however together with his general and friend Kardi, together with a small army of loyal soldiers had escaped and fled to the castle which once belonged to the kings deceased brother, Lord Oswin. It was here where he had kept his family.
Wednesday - January 29 - Year 1261 - Castle Alruïn, Midday time.
“Don’t let those dogs get trough the inner walls!!!” Kardi shouted as he pointed his halberd at the enemy before he and what remained of his loyal and brave men charged at the soldiers of King Darin of Ashran. It had turned very serious, not even a whole week had past after the loss of Elronde’s capital city Okata and already had the enemy approached Castle Alruïn, breached the outer wall and now where heading the last line of the castle defenses, the inner wall. With a loud roar he swept his halberd around, hitting all soldiers who came in contact with his mighty weapon and knocking them off afar. Now they where either dead or heavily wounded. “We will stand proud, Do not leave your posts until the last drop of your blood is spilled!” General Kardi shouted and he heard the proud roars of his men all around him. If he had to die today, he died saving the royal family, he thought.
Meanwhile inside the castle a small band of people was running trough the big decorated hallways. It was king Ishwald with his wife Asthasi and his son, the 10 year old Vivance with four of his personal guards, all carrying a sword and shield. They tried to flee the scene.
A half an hour ago a small taskforce had breached trough the thick doors f the castle, the royal guards and king Ishwald personally had done their best to fend them off, but they where too strong, especially the person leading this sudden assault. The man he knew as General Siegrun of Ashran. A very cruel man, who was known for his good looks but dangerous personality. It was thanks to him and his double blade (two swords attached on each side on a hilt) that many of the royal guards had lost there lives. As they where running the heard the death scream of the last of the guards, the ones who volunteered to stay behind and made sure the royal family could escape.
It would not be long before the enemy would catch up to them. “Keep running!” Ishwald shouted out as he looked back to see if there where any soldiers approaching. Suddenly his wife screamed and he quickly turned his head back just to see two of the royal guards falling dead on the ground. Before the group stood General Siegrun. “For a king who have been running a lot in battle you are not very fast.” Siegrun smirked while using his free hand to toss aside some stray hair back in place.
The king took a few steps forward and unsheathed his sword, a small double edged blade, as long as an arm. Siegrun laughed and put the back of his hand before his mouth to shield his laugh. “Are you finally going to fight? That took you long enough. I am dying to see that famed swordplay of yours. I heard that there aren’t many people who could withstand the speed of your arms and legs.” Siegrun took in his battle position, holding the hilt of his double blade with both hands.
“And you aren’t go it to withstand it either!” The king shouted and turned his head to Asthasi whom was clutching Vivance in her hands. “Stay back! I don’t want you to be hurt. I am going to be alright! I can take this man!” Asthasi nodded and stepped back, still holding onto Vivance who was shaking of fear. “Alright!” Ishwald returned his eyes back to his opponent. “Attack!!!” He and the two remaining guards ran up towards the enemy general, who blocked all the three attacks with his weapons, one by one and with amazing speed, before slicing his blades left and right, cutting and killing the last of the royal guard. “Pawns should stay out of big fights!” Siegrun smiled as he and Ishwald exchanged and blocked bows. “You will not…harm my family!” Ishwald shouted, dodging the attack of the general and struck him back. Unfortunately Siegrun managed to dodge it, and the only thing the sword sliced trough was the cape of the general. “On the contrary!” He responded and stroke back with a deadly force which the king managed to block...”When I am done with you I am going to gut them like the pigs they are!” He cackled and again blows where exchanged. For the king it started to become difficult. Battle with the enemy when they had breached trough the outer wall already had tired him out, and lastly during that battle he was hit by an arrow in his left arm. He was at a disadvantage, yet he bravely fought on. “It’s over old man!” Siegrun suddenly sneered and slammed his double-blade at the king, who blocked the attack with an attack of his own, locking the blades together. “Not..yet!” The king panted. “Yes..it..IS!!!” he released his blade with one hand and pressed it onto the wound on the kings left arm. Ishwald roared out in pain and cringed a little, but just enough for Siegrun to fend back the king’s sword and to create an opening. It was because of this opening that the general was able to pierce trough the king’s chest with his blade.
“F..father” Vivance whispered as he saw how the body fell onto the floor. Lady Asthasi let out a scream which was heard all the way outside of the castle. “O no” General Kardi responded and pushed back the twelve men he was fighting with his halberd and ran off to the castle…
“It is said that after a child witnesses a horrible moment, it’s mind will lock these memories and images away so that the child can be able to live on without having to dwell in the past. This unfortunately, didn’t happen to me. The horrible images are still as clear to me as the day it happened.”
“ISHWALD!!!” Asthasi yelled at her husband, but he didn’t move a muscle.
“Stop wasting your voice. The king is dead!” Siegrun laughed and walked over to her, his double blade clutched in his right hand, blood from the king still covering the metal.
“But you and your son will soon see him again, I will make sure of that!” He grabbed the queen’s hand forcefully and pulled her closer to him into an hostage-hug, the sharp edge of his blade pressed against her neck. “D..do with me as you will..but please I beg you. Leave my son be!” Asthasi begged the General, but he just laughed in response. “I was send here by the great king Darin to put an end to Elronde’s royal family line for good, surely you must know that this also means I have to kill that little brat! But I am a good man. I will just kill him first then, to save him from seeing his sweet little mother being murdered by me.”
“You wouldn’t dare!” She responded in fear, but felt how he let go of her hand and grabbed Vivance by the collar of his clothes dragging him closer towards himself. The poor kid couldn’t do a thing, he was petrified of fear. “Now, just be a good boy and stay still, this will just hurt a little” Siegrun grinned as he aimed the other half of his double blade, downwards to the young Vivance.
He had let down his guard on the queen. “NO!!” She yelled as she grabbed the sharp edge of the blade with both hands, she felt her blood streaming out of cut that the sharp edge of the sword made in her soft flesh, but her motherly instincts had driven this pain all out of her system, the only thought she had was to save her son, save Vivance. She tucked her head sideways and with all her strength slammed the tip of the blade just past her head, piercing right trough the unprepared Siegrun’s eye. He cried in pain as he pushed the woman back against the wall with a loud smack, using his free hand to cover up the gushing wound, as if it had some healing force that could save him from the pain.
“Vivance..RUN!!” Asthasi shouted before she lunged at the general whom now started to think about the task he had to do. With a shout full of anger and hatred he threw Asthasi on the ground, and slammed his blade right in her throat. It didn’t take long for Asthasi’s eyes to lose the once cheerful and happy flicker of life, that her husband so much cherished about her. The queen had died..trying to protecting her only child from harm.
“I still remember how after the deed that man turned his head to me, his face looked so full of anger, so full of hate. I still remember how I whispered the word “demon” before I started to run…”
The young boy started to run as fats as he could, hearing the loud footsteps of the general close behind him, he found an opened door and ran right trough it, slamming it closed quickly before he ran away again, his mind vaguely recognized it was the kitchen, where the servants wants brought him, his mother and his father the most delicious of food. He heard the heel of the general break right trough the hole and the cursing of that man, trying to wring his leg free. He opened the next door leading to the huge dining hall, and quickly hid behind the open door. Not soon after the General came rushing in, looking around for where the boy went. He kicked away the long elegant table and slashed his blade right trough the small closet which was standing in the room before he turned around, noticing the boy standing right next to the door. With an evil grin he rushed at Vivance whom immediately started to make a run for it back into the kitchen, trough the other entrance, where the wooden door now laid shattered in pieces of wood all over the floor and back to where his mother and father was killed.
There he saw a man in armor kneeled down, holding the corpse of his mother into his hands, giving her a kiss on the still warm forehead. It was General Kardi.
“I remembered how I tried to shout my lungs out but there came no sound out it. It was as if I forgot how to speak, as if I was transformed into an infant. The feeling of fear I had back then I can never forget and are still a source to the biggest of my nightmares. The fear of being so close to safety, but not been able to call out for it. An experience I pray never to feel ever again.”
Luckily for the young Prince, Kardi looked up and saw Vivance. “Young Vivance!” He shouted and ran towards the boy. Holding him safely into his hands. “We have to get out of here, little one. The enemy is everywhere.” He said and lifted him up and just started to run when Siegrun blocked his path.
“You are not going anywhere!” Siegrun yelled at Kardi and dashed forward. Because of Vivance clutched into his arms Kardi couldn’t take his weapon with him, but it didn’t matter. He too charged forward and as a starplayer of rugby he tackled Siegrun back into the wall with such a loud slam, that it left a huge crack in the wall. Siegrun slowly glided towards the ground unconscious, his back leaning against the wall.
“I remember how I tried to yell at Kardi that that man killed my mother and my father, that he should go back and finish him off. But again no sound came from my voice. Thanks to Kardi I escaped, but the battle and the war was lost. Elronde had been defeated and Ashran was now fully in control over the once so glorious and happy country. King Darin managed to rebuild this all. Restore order into the streets of the cities whom weren’t ruïnend, he killed all the big lords and lady’s, as well as the generals and the tacticians of the late king, my father as a precaution they would not seek to reclaim the land….
Exactly 8 years have passed since the event which I lost my father, my mother..and my land. No longer am I of noble blood, Kardi made sure of that. He told everyone how he and his own son survived the onslaught at the castle by escaping. At first I could not believe him. How could he speak like that! There was still hope! I was there, the rightful heir of the lost throne! But I understand now. If it was known the son of king Ishwald still lived, Darin would end every last one of his men to find and kill me, and then all hope would truly be lost…
I have learned to wield a sword, although I lack the skill to actually be useful in combat, however me and my “dad” have found work at a small rebel camp under the lead of a famous Elronde bandit. Torell, the one man’s army. He named his men: The Red Moon Rebels, and me and dad are respected members of it, well at least Kardi is. But he and Torell believes that one day Elronde will be restored to it’s former glory and king Darin would be kicked out for good. And that is enough for me to believe in this small band. The red moon rebels will do anything…for Elronde. I Vivance Elronde, son of the late king Ishwald Elronde pledge this with my life!”
